The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Psalm 34:18
During one of my rare low times, I was pulled from the fire by M. R. DeHaan's lovely book Broken Things. Never before had I realized how close we can become to God at such times.
There are the blessed ones who come to him in joy. A biography of Jonathan Edwards tells of his walking with a friend and laughing over some occurrence. They knelt in prayer and thanked God for their laughter.
More often it seems that, like Job, we must be leveled by tragedy in order to come to really know Him. Is it not true that those closest to God are strengthen by sorrow, while those who have yet to come close to him are brought low?
"Sooner or later, life will break your heart," said a French philosopher. For those so broken, may I say, sooner or later God will heal you.
